El Rastro de Camilo est un documentaire qui retrace les histoires et les mémoires cachées du père Camilo Torres Restrepo (1926-1966) et de la Colombie, cinquante ans après la mort du « prêtre guérillero » et à travers une série d’archives personnelles et historiques inédites découvertes ces dernières années.

Les réalisateurs y enquêtent sur ce qui est advenu du corps disparu de Camilo Torres Restrepo, caché par les militaires après avoir été tué au combat en tant que membre du groupe subversif ELN en 1966. Ils analysent également comment son interprétation des évangiles se convertit en une proposition éthique qui sert de point de départ au mouvement de la théologie de la libération, au-delà de l’usage des armes.

Camilo Torres Restrepo est un ancien étudiant en sociologie de l’Université catholique de Louvain de 1954 à 1958. Il termine ses études par un mémoire de licence intitulé « Approche statistique aux problèmes socio-économiques de la ville de Bogotá » et se lie d’amitié avec François Houtart, prêtre, sociologue professeur émérite de l’Université catholique de Louvain, qui commence alors sa vaste enquête sur l’état de l’Église en Amérique latine (40 volumes), à laquelle Camilo Torres Restrepo participe. En ce sens, ce documentaire touche aussi bien l’histoire de la Colombie, des prémisses de la théologie de la libération que des relations entre l’Université catholique de Louvain et l’Amérique latine.

Le Collectif  Frente Unido – Investigación Independiente (CFU) est un collectif de recherche en autogestion qui met en œuvre un processus de mémoire autour de Camilo Torres Restrepo depuis le paradigme de la recherche-action participative, proposée par le sociologue colombien Orlando Fals Broda.

APPEL A CONTRIBUTIONS - Journée doctorale « Genre et développement »

Tous les deux ans, l’école doctorale thématique en études du développement organise une journée
doctorale «genre et développement». Elle aura cette année lieu le 8 mars 2017 et abordera la
question de la réflexivité dans le champ du genre et développement.

Le champ du genre et développement s’est constitué autour de la nécessité d’éliminer les inégalités
entre les femmes et les hommes, et s’est penché sur l’étude de ces dynamiques dans les processus
de développement. Mais, en tant que chercheur.e, comment participer à l’élimination de ces
inégalités ? Quels liens construire - et comment -, entre autres avec les mouvements sociaux, de
femmes et féministes, au Nord comme au Sud ? Les intervenants sont invité-e-s à prendre distance
par rapport à leur démarche de recherche pour expliciter leur positionnement et comment elles/ils
l’ont traduit dans leurs choix de recherche passées et actuelles : choix de problématique, de terrain,
de méthode et/ ou de mode de restitution.

Afin d’ouvrir la discussion, trois académiques ayant une longue expérience de recherche dans le
champ du genre et développement, Christine Verschuur (IHEID, Genève), Narda Henriquez (PUCP,
Lima) et Hélène Guétat-Bernard (ENFA, Toulouse) se prêteront à l’exercice en donnant chacune une
conférence introductive.

Nous invitons tout.e chercheur/euse doctorant.e et postdoctorant.e.- intéressé.e par ces questions -
qu’elle/il mène ses recherches dans le champ du genre et développement ou avec une perspective
de genre dans un autre champ des sciences sociales - à participer à ces discussions en soumettant un
résumé de sa présentation. Un résumé d’une page maximum doit être envoyé pour le 13 février à
mathilde.vandrooghenbroeck@uclouvain.be.
Chaque intervention sera commentée par une des
académiques, qui sera invitée à entrer en dialogue avec le/la chercheur/euse autour des questions
qu’elle/il aura soulevées. Les présentations ne dureront pas plus de 20 minutes chacune. Le
programme définitif sera publié ultérieurement.

Le cycle de séminaires portant sur les transitions dans les pays musulmans fait suite aux cycles organisés depuis trois ans par le CECID et se penche en particulier cette année sur les dynamiques internes traversant les pays de la région.

Course: Academic Writing: The Research Article / 2016-17 / quadrimesters 1 & 2

The Academic Writing—The Research Article course (24 hours) is held twice a year: once in the first semester and once in the second semester. The course is intended for PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers who have already written, or are in the process of writing an article or a chapter of a thesis. There is a limited number of places reserved for post-doctoral researchers. Groups will ideally comprise up to 12 participants actively involved in writing during the semester they are taking the course.
The aim of the course is to enable researchers to take more confident control of their own writing. The course provides writing resources and a good introduction to strategies to improve productivity when writing in an additional language. To improve readability for an international audience and accuracy of written expression, the course focuses on organisational principles in writing and on frequent language editing difficulties, based partially on examples and exercises, and partially on participants’ own work (sections of an article or of a thesis chapter). Participants are also encouraged to develop sufficient awareness of accuracy and readability issues in English to be able to give relevant feedback on writing to other writers.

Schedule:
Students may follow one course, either in the first or in the second quadrimester; individual group timetables to be announced. You can find the academic calendar week timetable on the ULB website.
First quadrimester: One 2-hour session per week for 12 weeks, in academic calendar weeks 1-6 and 8-13.
Second quadrimester: One 2-hour session per week for 12 weeks, from academic calendar week 21 (week beginning 06/02/2017) to academic calendar week 34, excluding the spring break.
Place: Campus Solbosch, (timetables and rooms to be announced).

Prerequisites:
i) The course is given entirely in English; before starting the course, participants must be sufficiently fluent in English (Intermediate Level B1+ minimum) to be able to contribute with confidence to group discussion about writing.
ii) Participants must be actively writing in English; experience shows that the course is most useful when doctoral students have already made considerable progress in clarifying the purpose of their research and in articulating their ideas in a first article or thesis chapter. For this reason, the course is not normally recommended for students in the first year of their doctoral programme.

Applicants meeting the entry requirements will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. For doctoral students, priority is given to students from year 2 onwards.
To obtain credits for the course, a certificate of attendance will be issued during the final class on condition the student attends 75% of their group's classes. There is no final examination.

Rationale:

This conference is intended to stir an international debate on the concept and understanding of “resistance” in its various meanings. In this respect, the use of the word resistance in its plural form for the title of this conference is not incidental. It emphasizes our will to explore the complexity and multi-faceted forms, locations, aims, and outcomes inherent to the concept of resistance. We see resistance(s) not only as a concept that can be engaged with from various angles. It is also an approach that can help a dialogue between academia and other sectors, a thing that this conference seeks to explore in broad temporal and geographical perspectives.

From mass public protests during the Arab Springs and the Indignados and Occupy movements, to individual disobedience from whistle blowers (Assange, Snowden), resistance (to domination, oppression, or simply mainstream political power) has been manifesting itself in a variety of modes. This newly available empirical evidence rapidly generated numerous, rich accounts and encountered studies of social movements and contentious politics. What have remained largely understudied are the accounts of non-politicised or non-overtly politicised movements, the transformation of informal resistance into movements, their politicisation, and the relationship between informal resistance and political change.

Some recent works have, however, addressed this lack in the field (see, for instance, Chenoweth and Stephan, Why Civil Resistance Works, Schock, Civil Resistance Today, Vinthagen, A Theory of Nonviolent Action: How Civil Resistance Works). We would thus like to encourage emerging research on this subject.

We welcome empirically-grounded case studies as well as theoretical (and/or) epistemological reflections on topics related (but not limited) to:

- Silent and “loud” resistances as case study (nonviolent, violent, public and hidden, individual or collective…)

- Resistance and social change

- Informal networks, practices, and their significance in policy making

- Globalised vs localised resistance

- Vulnerability and resistance (gender, minorities, marginalised communities)

- Economic or financial resistance

- Everyday struggle and resistance vs more organised and long-term forms of resistance

- Methodological approaches and consideration for the study of resistance

- Ethics and resistance (how to deal with the publication of cases where resistance is secret, or needs to escape the radar of authorities)

We are keen to promote an interdisciplinary reflection on the concept of resistance and a broad theoretical and methodological understanding of the issue. Accordingly, we would like to open participation to activists who would like to present an analytical reflection based on their work.

In addition, willing to challenge past and present understandings of the concept, and to bring about new perspectives, we welcome contributions from both experienced and early career researchers.

Applicants will be notified by the 5^th of November about their acceptance.

We might be able to provide some financial support to researchers (especially early career researchers) who have no sponsorship from their own institute. We can't guarantee full sponsorship for everyone but we will try to offer a contribution in the region of 250 EUR for participants from Europe and 500 for participants from outside of Europe. About our Keynote Speakers:

· James C. Scott:

James C. Scott challenged traditional understandings of resistance by analyzing everyday forms of resistance and conceptualizing of “infrapolitics” (see, Weapons of the Week, 1985, Domination and the Art of Resistance, 1991). His research concerns political economy, comparative agrarian societies, theories of hegemony and resistance, peasant politics, revolution, Southeast Asia, theories of class relations and anarchism.

His recent publications include Seeing Like a State: How Certain Schemes to Improve the Human Condition Have Failed (1997), and The Art of Not Being Governed: An Anarchist History of Upland Southeast Asia (2009).

He will be presenting results and reflections from his latest research.

· Stellan Vinthagen:

Stellan Vinthagen is the Inaugural Endowed Chair in the Study of Nonviolent Direct Action and Civil Resistance at The University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He is also a researcher in his native Sweden at The Department of Social and Behavioral Studies, University West, and at The School of Global Studies, University of Gothenburg, where he is leading the Resistance Studies Program. Vinthagen researches resistance, power, social movements, nonviolent action and social change. His latest publications include A Theory of Nonviolent Action – How Civil Resistance Works (2015).

Having been active in many different social movements since 1980 (environmental, migrant rights, anti-arms trade, peace, Palestine solidarity, etc.), he has participated in more than 30 nonviolent civil disobedience actions. He has been an educator, organizer and activist in several countries, and will be presenting his intake on nonviolent resistance and its ability to bring about social change.

Résumé de la présentation

Les efforts de démocratisation ont dominé la politique africaine au cours des 25 dernières années. Dans les pays à majorité musulmane du Sahel (africain),

cette période a également vu l'émergence d'une «sphère publique Islamique».
De nouveaux acteurs revendiquant une certaine autorité religieuse, posant parfois des défis énormes aux vieilles orthodoxies et s’inspirant souvent des nouvelles dynamiques mondiales, ont rejoint les débats sur le rôle de l'islam dans le jeu démocratique.

Cette communication examinera d'abord les changements historiques graduels dans les mouvements religieux du Sahel depuis le début des années 1990, puis se tournera vers une analyse des changements importants en cours, en particulier celui de la place des mouvements islamistes.
